its all coming from a bunch of tweens who are calling the album disgusting, "eww"? and leaving other forms of negative feedback.

how many times do people have to say "the album is called hot mess, hense why she is hot and looks a mess" etc over and over again. the reason, why is because none of you seem to get it.
i absolutely love the cover, bim is a close friend of mines and pulled this off great, respect too her.

but for all the kids whining about the target audience and how their parents wont let them buy it because of the cover? get a grip. how can you possibly try and diss an album cover when above all the lyrics in alot of cobra starship songs are pretty explicit.
you guys need to stop being so hypocritical and face it.

the band have done great with the album, so pay them that respect.
and last time i checked.theres also a ton of great images for inside the album sleeve too.

another edit: just looked at your older album covers. it ties in well with viva la cobra i feel but i think it's such a leap from while the city sleeps. please say that you haven't forgotten the sounds of that album.

news flash world: (i guess im repeating what others have been saying in my own words)

you can dislike an album cover but love the artist. you can hate the picture but still be a fan.
for cryin out loud. i personally don't like it that much (although it has grown on me) but that doesn't mean i'm no longer a fan, luckily i don't live by my emotions in that manner.

there's tons of singers and bands that have a cover that i wouldn't pick out...but here's the thing...I'm not in that band, I'm not that artist. I'm the listener, and if they're doing what they like instead of being bossed around by someone else...than at least I get the small chance of seeing who they are as musicians, artists, etc. and just because it might not be something that I agree with...doesn't mean I can't just like the music. Or just them as people.

So, I don't know what the target age fanbase is for Cobra Starship, but I'm a 20 year old, african-american female. I read something about this being racist or whatever (i dunno honestly i just skimmed), and i think that's a crock of crap, man. This is the hottest album cover I've seen in a long time, not to mention it's original and just straight up sexy. Bim Fernandez is gorgeous, and she looks sexy even though you can't even see her face. I dunno what's wrong with you people's parents. When I was 13 years old, my mother bought me Simple Plan's first album, and it had half naked women riddled throughout it. and a few years later, I got Eminem's album, which had cursing and murder riddled throughout it. (lol) I know for a fact that this album cover isn't nearly as bad as some of the SONGS you listen to, anyway. Maybe you should just grow a pair and tell your parents this is whats up. Or keep whining, whatever. But you'll never get anywhere in life if you just keep whining about things. ESP. THE GIRL WHO IS ABOUT TO GO TO COLLEGE, and her mom would take this album away from her. COME ON, GROW UP.

they haven't asked for their parents to be strict, only because your family sees things differently and reacts differently to what these other kids' parents act like, doesn't mean you should complain about the kid themselves.

Gabe!! ahh i could write a novel about how amazing you are. I remember one day surfing music around myspace and somehow came upon your page. you had polaroids and like 12 friends. I thought you were a crazy creeper guy. I just left the page and was like...whatever. then like a week after, pete posted a link to that same page on an away message and i was like.."no way are you serious!?" then i actually gave the time to see what you were about (haha sorry) and i was amazed. you are so crazy and just do what you feel. I love that about people. Everyone is so fake and just does stuff to please, but you just do what makes you happy. I have been to every show in dallas and it is always the best shows ever. its more of a party than a concert. There was one about a year and a half ago, that was amazing. small room, talking to the crowd a lot. everyone was having so much fun it was amazing. I am so happy for your success and how much the band has grown. the music is always wonderful and whenever i am in a down mood, cobra never fails me. i just want to get up and dance and have a good time. you guys are always so nice whenever we talk after or before shows. all you do is just be yourself, but it makes me happy. i am glad to see that some bands can be real. I just want to thank you for making my life a little bit better. xo

wtf even if u think leighton cant sing shit she is still blair waldorf....and you know how much gabe loves her and was so happy to work with her. even if you didnt like the song you shouldve thought about how gabe was able to make one of his dreams come true and make her sing a song with cobra..part of being a fan is to see the artists you support thrive and be happy. its not all about what they do for you. they are ppl too so its too bad that you couldnt enjoy the song like the rest of us but that very song is what put cobra into the top 40 so like it or not you still have to thank leighton for contributing to cobras success. and if u dont like the album art then buy it on itunes or something so u dont have to look at the cover and if u havent liked the songs so far from the album then i dont know what else advice i can give other than find some other artist to support cause clearly most of what u just said shows otherwise..

When I first heard the name of the album, I gagged. Hot Mess? That's horribly unoriginal. I decided that the cover art would probably make up for it. Sadly, I was disappointed yet again.

Unoriginal name + ugly-ass cover art = blehz. The new songs are a little upsetting too.

Please make me proud. I know you can do better than you've been doing lately. This is worse than the Jonas Brothers' new song Poison Ivy... trust me, that's pretty bad.

It's kinda funny when I read the comments, because there are two different opinions here. Some people think that it's really gross, when on the other hand, other people just loved it! I have to admit that my first tought was: "Oh shit, what the hell is that?" But then I looked again, and again, and I though: "Damn, they got me! This is such a Hot Mess!" You really did it. As a Graphic Designer...well, in training...I'd have to say it's cool. I mean, i like it okay. It's not exactly what I would have designed, but that tat is freaking sweet! It works well, i really like the tat as i said, and how the nail decor ties in with the color of the letters. The words are really the only thing that go with the first two album covers...which kind of is sad...cuz i really liked the style of the first two covers. Actually, i take that back. The second album was Gabe in one of his hoodies...which looked a lot like this...necklace and all. It has the same feel too. So it's not that out there for the band to come up with this. It would have been cool to see something a tad bit more...new. Oh well. It's still a good band. Hopefully...lol, just kidding. Fangs up!

I know everybody's a critic and don't get me wrong, I like the cover. Its very 2 Live Crew-esque. Instead of 4 girls and their bubble butts on display its one moist girl with her biddies half out. However, I still think it would have been a more cohesive idea to have had the fab cobra five on the cover looking like hot messes. But whatevs, maybe that's just me.

P.S. I'm not really expecting a reply but I'm gonna address the pink internet elephant in the room. Gabe, whose side are you on? Perez's side or Will-i-am's side? To be honest, the cover would be great minus the grease and the hair sticking to her boobs. That's what makes it gross. But yeah, her nails are fierce and the tat is a good way to show the album name. The color of the words do need some touching up, they look a little drab. I showed my mom, and she didn't like it, but she didn't flip out, she's used to my music taste. I think you should note that the cover is misleading as to what type of music you make, and it is really the music that counts. Just be careful, guys, you may get a fanbase you aren't looking for. I think griller and tha ryland III were better, imo lol. But whatever, it isn't as bad on second look. I love PWITORWF and Good Girls Go Bad, but just don't lose your City sleeps sound. I love you guys so much, and congrats on making the top 40.

My initial reaction to seeing your album cover was kneejerk upset, but I took a walk and let it simmer to figure out why I was bothered. A few hours later, and what it comes down to, for me, is that I think the album artwork is disappointing. It's another something out there that seems to champion the degradation of young girls, and more specifically, girls interested and/or participatory in this scene. Thousandth verse; same as the first, you know?

It's also racially coded. I'm a fan of color, and I think I can count on one hand the number of times I feel like this scene has acknowledged my existence, participation, and loyalty to the music and bands within your network. I do have to give you credit for representing and giving it up to Latino folks who show up, dance, and buy in. That's awesome and much appreciated, but it still bugs me that of those few times I've ever felt even marginally acknowledged and included in this scene, racially, it's part of an image not at all meant to be respected.

I get the joke. I saw one of Cobra's first shows. I've read your blogs, etc. I get it; I'm into it. It's why I stood in line for the basement in first place, but what makes Cobra work most (again, for me) is when you include yourselves in the joke, whereas this image, especially as an introduction to the new album/sound/chapter from Cobra, is something that feels exclusionary. The cover doesn't indicate to me that we're all ridiculous together so much as it's saying, hey, here's exactly who we're making fun of, and I can't lie, it kind of sucks to have people I respect make the same kind of joke that more mainstream media makes every day. I mean, ultimately, I also just think you guys have way more cleverness in you, so why settle for something old-hat and vaguely offensive?

I don't mean any disrespect, and I know the new songs are going to be as layered and fun as usual. I also don't mean to insinuate anything about Bim as a person. I've seen other pictures of her, and I think she's a beautiful girl, and I'm excited to hear her on the album. I just wanted to get it out there why this specific image-as-introduction to 'Hot Mess' rubs me the wrong way.

cobras is about letting go , having fun, and not getting so heavy (even though sometimes, it cant be avoided) - but seriously, for an album called Hot Mess? what do you expect ? our first album had a girl about to lick a very phallic looking cobra. i'm not saying it's wrong or right. but i'm just sayig taht there is definitely a precedent for offensiveness in cobras. also, as a latino and an immigrant, i think it sucks that minorities aren't more represented in this scene. and i'm very proud to see how many latinos and african americans and otehr minorities come out to our shows. i'm not saying that there aren't minorities at other shows, but i feel like cobra shows are definitely more of a melting pot. teh race thing has nothing to do with the cover. but if you were going to think about that, i think it's better to think of it as breaking down boundaries rather than creating them.

I am Latina too and I had some punk music on for fathers day and my mom was like why are we listening to this. My dad loves it but my mom would rather listen to Enrique Iglesias lol. Don't get me wrong I do love my bachata, reggaeton, salsa and merengue.
I think it is great to have a Latino successful in punk music and to see more minorities involved. I am going to a concert in July and none of my friends listen to the same music but my best friend agreed to go with me. I played her the music and she was like "great I am going to be the only black person there" I was laughing so hard but it seems like the crowds are getting a little more diverse at least I hope they are.
On another note I love the cover. I don't understand how it is offensive. But hey there is always someone, somewhere who is going to take offense to something.

I'm not good with moral values, so let's skip past the 'wrong' part and move on to the bit where you're worried about your friend. This part I can help with. All you can do is tell her what you see going on, ask her about the things you don't understand, and help her avoid danger. Demanding explanations or changes in your friend's destructive behavior won't change the behavior and can lose you the friend. I speak from experiences you probably don't want to repeat.

If you make demands then people avoid you, if you say nothing they blame you later for not doing anything, and if you say that you worry but don't point out specific negative consequences that you foresee and then get your 'told you so' in when it goes down, then they think you're paranoid and ignore you. None of that is fun.

The best tactic I've ever found is to help them, and I know that sounds like the opposite of a good idea, but bear with me. Help your friends do the stupid shit that they want to do, safely. Make them talk over the problem areas and the things that could go wrong, and work out back-up plans with them so that they aren't caught unawares when something goes wrong (and it will). It trains them into coming to you for help, which is it's own problem, but better than letting them do stupid shit without anyone looking out for them. After a while, it becomes less fun to do most of the dumb shit since someone has their back but is making them be responsible about it. It just becomes normal and can even be boring if you play your cards right.

My initial thought was "oh no, please don't be another bad, hypersexualized, faceless image of women of color again." Then I looked at it more. Gabe said her name on his blog, giving her credit. Her nails and the tattoo look fierce. Basically she is hot and the album will be too. I dont think most people would say the cover looks nasty if it was a white girl with blonde hair. I am excited that there is a darker skinned woman on this cover. Honestly, it's really fucking awkward sometimes going to shows, being the only minority girl. I think it's cool that the cobras are being more inclusive, and yes, I think a simple image can do that.

My mom wanted me to get Viva La Cobra instead of getting The Click Five.....and it was because of the cover.

The cover of the Click Five cover was the five guys just standing there in all black and on the back was pretty much the same only the lighting was much darker.

But then i asked about the Cobra album, and she glanced at it and said yes.
I know that it was because the cover was bight and cheery, this one will probably be harder to get.

She has never listened to either of the bands and if i can help it she never will, cause if she did they would be in the trash before you could say Gabilliam (heehee i had to do it)

My point is that the cover can be the reason the a parent will say no about a cd, i'm going to try and get Hot Mess :D, but i'll be sure to hide it from my mother.

so I've realised what it is about this cover that had been bugging me. It's the hair sticking to her chest, and the mass of grease...and the pastel colours for the lettering. I saw a comment further up in this where she photoshopped the cover and made the letter's brighter and it looked a lot better to me! I just think it would bring out all the colour a bit more than keeping it in pastel.
I would have commented on this pastelness when I saw the comment, but I forgot because I'm a twat. But yeah....pastel colours... :|

and yeah I get why there is all the grease and hair sticking to the boobs and whatnot, it's supposed to be a Hot Mess...duhh! But it doesn't mean that just because I get it, it won't irritate me for eternity (I'm one of those people that if there's something irritating me it will go round and round and round in my head until I fix it, but yeah...) I get the feeling that you maybe wanted to to be the sort of cover to maybe cause a bit of a stir and irritate a few people, or maybe you didn't and I'm just looking to deeply into this.

Either way, it's a good cover :) definitely will stick in my head for a while, for good and bad reasons.
Should be fun trying to describe the cover to my friend who agreed to buy the album for my birthday a few days later :)

We don't have to worship the ground our favourite band walks on to be considered a "real fan". A real fan is someone who genuinely considers the music the most important part of the band. But that doesn't mean we have to agree with the band on every matter! We're all entitled to our own opinions, weather they be good or bad. As long as we all enjoy the music they make, that's what makes us a fan or not.
I personally quite like the cover, even though there are a couple of things about it that nark me. An album cover is what represents a band to those who may not have heard of them, so is this is how they want to be perceived, that's their decision and I support them.

It may not be my favourite cover in the world but that's just how it goes!

Gabe here's my biggest issue, not to make this a racial thing. I'm stoked you put a black girl on the cover. But as a black model myself, I can tell you it really sucks to be on the cover of something that gets a negative general response. Because most brands/companies/productions are scared to make a black girl alone the face of anything for fear that it will sell less. So when you put a black girl on the cover with ratty hair looking greasy and gross, a cover that's almost repulsive, you're driving away a lot of potential sales and it gets to look like taking the "risk" of using a girl of color is to blame. (Even though if she were white, this would probably get the same response.) And I'm not saying this was your intention because I'm sure it's not, it's just something to consider. The concept is great, the execution is not.

And I don't understand the 2 Live Crew comparison. This isn't shocking or sexy. It's just unappealing. The BMTH album cover with the girl holding intestines was shocking, but beautifully done. You know?

ahhhh we was there :D i'm trying to remember if i saw you cas we were hanging around the tour bus. haha i'm really not good with remembering!!

we bought cds of mimi soya and i was showing mike my gabe necklace and told him that we didn't have tickets and that i wanted to show it to him and katielouise_x and i were going on about how it would make our day even if we saw him
and the other mimi soyas went to go soundcheck and mike called someone up for us to find out where gabe was and he was around the front. then katielouise_x went mental ;) haha and she ran and dragged me the whole way. i was like whoa!
but there were huge empty gaps next to gabe cas everyone was huddled around directly in front of him staring so we got in round the side ;) aha

oh, that really doesn't sound good at all. i would get even more scared if i have a panic attack.

i get freaked out as it is when i get excited/upset/angry. my chest seizes up and i hold my breath, which makes it even worse. the whole two days at cobra and the week before i kept doing it. and then for days after it too haha.

keep them in their trailer with the merch and equipment. LOL i know. the really official opposing pack? haha i suck so much.

negl, it's definitely grown on me because i stared at it for like 100 years.
I actually kind of don't mind it now and I think Bim is freaking gorgeous and it's definitely very cool that she got the tattoo for the cover.

Regardless, the cover is fun more than anything and if it's Cobra, can't we count on the fact that both the album AND the music will be fun?

yea its one of those things. u just have to keep looking at it and it grows on u. and its a cover anyway its the the music that counts. cobra isnt telling anyone to stare at the cover when they buy the cd so those that are really bothered by it seriously when u get the cd ( i hope u do buy the cd and support them and not boycott buying the cd cause of the cover) just take the cd out and put it in a different case or put it in one of those things...crap what are they called cd space saver things?lol and problem solved u dont have to stare at it. and just cause u dont like the cover i see no reason why u need to add on as well that u hope they dont disappoint u with the music as well...

sorry but i'm kind of not liking the fact that people are going on that it's a 'race issue' because they're coloured and there's a coloured girl on the front (see response a) or that they're so glad that there's a coloured person on the front (see response b) people are also complaining saying that it's giving coloured people bad names because of the negative comments on the cover. (see response c)

a) i do not think there's a problem with a coloured girl on the front. at all. i really can't see why there would be a race issue
b) that makes me feel awkward to be white tbh and i'm not too sure why. because i feel that i would be slated if i went 'oh i'm glad that there's a white girl on the front!'. do you kind of get what i mean?
c) i really couldn't give a shit what colour skin the girl on the cover has. it's a cover. there would be the same response for whatever colour her skin is tbh.

you never see a naturally extreeeemely pasty skinned white girl like me on the front of covers, possibly because people see it as unattractive or something (hence why people sunbathe in the summer to get a tan). only when used for a spooky eerie cover. i'm not complaining, i just don't get why people are overreacting about this.

...the only thing I don't like about the cover is that from a graphical standpoint, it's a compositional nightmare. 'Hot Mess' doesn't stand out nearly as much as it should. And 'Cobra Starship' would look better if the font was cleaner, and maybe with the colours a tad more saturated. But that's just the graphics geek in me. Concept is awesome, cos come on guys, it's Cobra. What did you lot expect?
